Eilean Castle

Eilean castle is a stronghold belonging to the Lord of Galloway. It is situated on a small island in the middle of the River Dee, upstream from Kirkcudbright, only a few miles from Balmaclellan and on the main road from Dumfries to Wigtown, Whithorn and Cruggleton Castle.

History

The first castle to occupy the island was a wooden fort built by Fergus of Galloway, the current Lord's great-grandfather. It was burned during the inheritance conflict that would result in Carrick being split off into a separate fief. The fort was rebuilt a handful of years later, and continues to see use as a toll collection post.

Currently, the castle is garrisoned only by a dozen crossbowmen under the command of Jaqueline de Lacey.
